:. 2007: Return of the FPS! || 7/12/2007 7:32:43 PM ||
Remember 2004 (and the tail end of 2003)?  Yeah, the best year in FPS games evar?  We had the best single player FPS games ever released in a pretty small window.  We got Half-Life 2, Far Cry, and Doom 3.  Those 3 alone made it the best year ever.  But then we also had some great MP releases as well.  Games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Counter Strike: Source (both of which I still play).  We also had lesser MP releases like Battlefield: Vietnam, Star Wars: Battlefront, Tribes Vengeance.  Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault was a pretty big disappointment.  But all of this came off of an outstanding end of 2003, with games like Halo PC, Unreal 2, Call of Duty and Unreal 2 XMP being released late in the year, and Battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament 2003 being released early in the year.  All of these games were released in a small window of about a year.  I mean, that's a lot of FPS goodness right there, 15 or so titles?  Sheesh, that's a game a month over that time period!

But what has happened in the last 3 years since then?  Have we had 40 more great FPS's released?  No.  Not at all.  We've had some sparse releases.  But nothing like '04.  Most notably, we had F.E.A.R. (plus an expansion), and Battlefield 2 (plus BF:2142).  F.E.A.R. was a great game.  Although it got a little boring near the end, it boasted incredible graphics, a great story, scary as hell situations, and really cool time slow down gameplay.  Some of us here really dug Battlefield 2 (/me winks at Womby), but I personally just couldn't get into it.  I haven't had much of a taste for Battlefield since 1942 (the game, not the year).  We also had the Doom 3 expansion Resurrection of Evil, which I loved. And we got a Half-Life 2 expansion, Episode 1, which didn't get as much love.  And then we have had a slew of mediocre titles, hardly worth bothering with.  Games such as Pariah, Quake IV, Call of Duty 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Prey, Serious Sam 2, and the Vista only Halo 2 PC.  That's 11 games, 4 less titles than the '03-'04 time frame, in 3 times as much time!!  And quality-wise, much, much less.  During this period, we've had a single LAN party, and it was a mix of Quake IV's bland multiplayer, and Age of Empires 3, an RTS for heaven's sake!

But all that is about to change.  2007 is 2004 part two.  We're getting 3 great multiplayer only games, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Team Fortress 2, and Unreal Tournament 3.  (OH YEAH! Valve vs Epic vs Id, grudge match from hell!!!)  We're getting 2 totally awesome COOP multiplayer games, Left 4 Dead and Gears of War.  And we're getting 4 of the best single player games ever released, Half-Life: Episode 2 (which is getting much better previews than episode 1 ever did), Crysis (best graphics evar!), Call of Duty 4, and Medal of Honor: Airborne Assault.    That's 9 AAA, bad ass, FPS games released in a 3 month window!!! HOLY COW!!!  That's almost as many games as the previous 3 years!  And the quality is way above and beyond those titles.  Hopefully this will spawn more lan parties, and maybe even a return to the GLO competitive clan (A bunch of us are testing the ET:QW beta, with -glo- tags already)!!  Sir Lagalot is itching to put an ET:QW server up, and with the demo version only weeks away, it should be soon.

And then the future is bright too.  We have Id's next game, based on their new Tech 5 engine, which will be shown next month at Quakecon, a new Wolfenstein game being worked on by Raven.  Dice is finally working on a new property, which they're calling Mirror's edge, and promises to take FPS's in a whole new direction.  There's also the RPG style FPS's like Hellgate: London, and Bioshock, the spiritual successor of System Shock 2.  And then we'll finally start getting some good MMOFPS games, like Huxley and The Agency and others.  I'm sure I'm leaving more out, but I'm going to try to keep the upcoming games section up to date for the next few months, so we can watch these titles rollout and build steam.  I've got most of these new titles stuck in there with their release dates, and I'll be getting more info, as well as screenshots up in the next few days. Also, E3 is currently going on (although in a much smaller format), and more news is bound to come from this.

Hooray for the return of the FPS!  There's never been a better time to upgrade those PC's!

:. id Announces Enemy Territory: Quake Wars || 5/16/2005 4:57:25 PM ||
The sequel to the game that made GLO create a clan:

id Software and Activision, Inc. today announced the development of ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS. Developed by Splash Damage and built on id Software's new MegaTexture rendering technology, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS pits the armies of Earth against the invading alien Strogg in the ultimate online strategic shooter. Featuring strategic team play, persistent character promotions, day and nighttime combat missions, and the universe's most powerful weapons and vehicles, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS transports players to the front lines of an epic new war for Earth.
"For years, fans have enjoyed incredible battles on the Strogg home planet; but with ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS, we're taking players back to the war that started it all - the Strogg invasion of Earth - where the choice is to fight with the humans or the alien Strogg in a massive campaign for survival," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Like all great id Software games, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS unites bleeding-edge technology, a fantastic universe, and meticulously balanced gameplay to deliver an engrossing and futuristic gaming experience."

"We have been so proud of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's rave reviews, 'Game of the Year' awards, and massive fan-base, so to work with id again in developing ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS is an amazing opportunity." states Paul Wedgwood, Lead Game Designer and Owner of Splash Damage Ltd. "The stories of the Strogg invasion of Earth have always fascinated me, and now through ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS, we're able to bring this incredible war to life with an uncompromising level of detail and realism."

As the invasion begins, players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the EDF (Earth Defense Force - humans) or the barbaric alien Strogg armies, each augmented with specialist weapons and combat hardware. Troops utilize over 40 conventional and futuristic vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems like quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to lend firepower from the air. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the enemy.

With realistic dynamic lighting and shadowing from headlights, searchlights and even the moon, battles can be fought during the day or night; while accurate simulation of the atmosphere, weather, and vegetation combine to create an unparalleled degree of realism. Battlefields are perfectly rendered using MegaTexture, a totally new rendering technology developed by id Software that crunches millions of polygons and a gigabyte-scale texture into a single, seamless and un-tiled landscape with unique detail down to the square inch or the un-obscured distant horizon.

Players can take on class specific missions or join a fireteam to utilize advanced command and communication options, including voice-chat and the game's context sensitive mission order system. With bitterly contested multi-battle campaigns, each soldier fights not only for victory, but to gain valuable skills, special rewards for team-play, and persistent military promotions and medals. ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS will debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision's booth #1224 in the South Hall.

:. I beat Call Of Duty || 11/25/2004 4:18:56 PM ||
Well I finally got through Call Of Duty single player. Took me a while but I don't play every day-just once in awhile. Also I've been "distracted" by a little game called Doom3. Anyway, planting the Red Army flag on the Reichstag was fun, I recommend it to anyone. Anyone got any plans for a half-Life 2 Lan?
